Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assist (CSFA) plays a vital role in delivering safe, efficient, high‑quality surgical care. Working closely with surgeons, RNs, anesthesiologists, and the surgical team, the CSFA provides advanced technical support during procedures and helps maintain a safe, prepared, and patient‑centered operative environment.
This role supports patients across the lifespan—from neonates to geriatrics—and contributes directly to positive surgical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as first assist during surgical procedures under surgeon supervision
- Perform intraoperative tasks including tissue handling, exposure, suturing, and hemostasis
- Prepare and maintain the surgical field, ensuring proper equipment, supplies, and instrumentation
- Review procedure cards and case carts; identify and resolve missing items
- Anticipate surgeon and team needs based on procedure and physician preferences
- Monitor patient condition and report changes promptly
- Maintain equipment knowledge and proper use
- Support continuous improvement through documentation updates, preference card revisions, and process feedback
- Demonstrate professionalism and patient confidentiality
- Participate in professional development and maintain required certifications
Physical requirements include standing/walking, lifting up to 50 lbs, assisting with patient positioning, and working in a fast‑paced environment with frequent deadlines.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (required)
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant program
- BLS certification (required by completion of core orientation)
- Demonstrated competency in a wide range of surgical procedures
- Ability to read and interpret data from equipment, monitors, and computer systems
- Strong communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide positive customer service
- Successful completion of hospital, core, and department orientation
- On‑the‑job orientation with a qualified RNFA or CSFA
