Position Summary
The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) works collaboratively with surgeons, RNs, and the surgical care team to deliver safe, efficient, high‑quality intraoperative care. The RNFA practices interdependently with the operating surgeon, providing advanced technical skills, clinical judgment, and patient‑centered support across all age groups.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide intraoperative first‑assist support under surgeon supervision
- Perform endoscopic vein harvesting independently
- Apply the full nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Assist with patient positioning, equipment handling, and surgical preparation
- Document patient care accurately and communicate changes in condition
- Administer medications and treatments per policy
- Support patient safety, comfort, and education
- Respond to emergent situations following established protocols
- Serve as a clinical resource and role model for support staff
- Participate in performance improvement activities
- Rotate among clinical service areas as needed
Physical requirements include standing/walking, lifting up to 20 lbs regularly, assisting with heavier tasks, and working in fast‑paced environments with frequent deadlines.
Qualifications
- Current Michigan RN license
- Completion of an accredited RNFA program
- One year of RNFA clinical experience
- Competency in perioperative nursing and surgical assisting
- Proficiency in endoscopic vein harvesting
- Ability to assist patients from neonate through geriatric populations
- BLS certification (required by end of core orientation)
- CNOR certification or active enrollment in a CNOR program
- Completion of AORN‑accredited RNFA coursework
- Successful completion of hospital, core, and unit orientation
Education Requirement: Diploma, ADN, or BSN. Nurses hired without a BSN must obtain one within 8 years of hire.
